We were ready for the kids’ first hurricane. Almost.
We had food, water, and back-up power. Our windows were shuttered and our normally sunny home was dim. Outside, the winds were beginning to whistle. The only thing left to do was fill our kids hearts up with courage...
So we did our family devo for the morning, and during the day the kids helped with the last little bits of hurricane prep. We talked about other storms that God has carried us through. Anytime one of the littles seemed to grow nervous, their face would turn to mine. They knew that Mama and Papa were not afraid. They could feel it.
That night the hurricane came to our house, but our children slept like rocks. They knew that no matter what happened, God would not leave them.
Wondering what we talked about that could possibly help them sleep in peace in the face of a hurricane? Well, I wrote it down for you!
Fear and Courage Devotion
Read Joshua 1:8-9.
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” -Josh 1: 8
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” -Josh 1:9
Talk about it:
We like that verse about being strong and not being afraid, don’t we? But how do we actually do it? How do we not think about scary stuff when there’s scary stuff going on?
God gives us the answer in the verse just before it (read it again). Our minds are built to think and think and think! But you can really only focus on ONE thing at a time. If we fill our minds up with what God says and who God is, then we will be able to think about Him instead of what’s going on around us. We can think about how much He loves us even when bad things happen.
And when we’re thinking like that, then we can do what verse nine says: be strong and courageous, not be discouraged or afraid!
Ask God to help you and your children fill and focus your minds on Him and His Word, no matter what is going on around you.
