Right In Front Of You

3/13/2017

You CAN teach your kids about God!
Jesus was weird. Seriously. He didn't host regularly scheduled holy productions or use the latest curriculum. In fact, Jesus totally ignored many of the things we believe you "need" to do to teach kids/people about God...

Stuff the Master Teacher Skipped Over...

  • A well structured sermon outline
  • A theology degree (he could have been the high priest's son; instead he chose a carpenter for his daddy)
  • Awesome music, band, and visuals
  • The perfect curriculum
Instead, Jesus chose to reach the hearts of His followers in the small bits of ordinary life.
  • A sparrow catches His eye and He points that out: See! Your Father cares about that sparrow, and He cares even more for you!
  • A little girl hands Him a bouquet, and he's like, Wow! Look at how pretty Father God dressed these flowers!  He will clothe you, too!
  • A storm threatens to sink their boat and drown them all, and Jesus is all, Peace! Waves are big but I Am Bigger.

Yes, Jesus spoke to massive crowds, but even when thousands gathered, he still spoke of things that impacted their individual lives. Can't you just imagine the walk home? Those Mamas and Papas would leave the gathering with their excited little ones tugging on their arms.  "Papa! Did you see? He said you had to have faith like me! He pointed right at me!" and "Look, Mama! It's one of them sparrows Jesus was talking about! Can I give him my crumbs?"

What This Means For Mamas...

This means you and I can take a deep breath! It is totally possible for us to help our kids to see our King with the eyes of their hearts!

You don't have to spend hours researching the root of the historical Greek in the text. You don't have to have a degree.
You simply have to stand in awe of what's right in
front of you, and connect it to the Creator.

"For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God." -Romans 1:20 NLT

How Do You Show Them the King?

  • When you notice that knock-your-socks-off-beautiful-sunrise, gasp in wonder, point and whisper to your early riser: "Look what God painted this morning! He knew you and I would look just now, and He painted it just for us!"
  • When you hear the birds singing for all they're worth, hush yourself and listen. Your kids are sure to stop and wonder what on earth you're doing. That's when you whisper "Listen... They are singing to their King!"

Do You Know What That Says To Your Kids?

  • God is so real to my Mama, she sees His work everywhere.
  • Pretty skies aren't random chances, they are love notes from the Master Painter for everyone willing to accept them.
  • The birds are not racket to be ignored, they are the voice of creation calling to its King.
You really CAN teach your kids about God (and you don't need a degree)!
Ask the Lord to help you find those moments! The more you do it, the better you get at it! So exercise those Jesus-muscles, and ask the Good Lord to use you to help open your children's eyes.  He won't let you down!

Want More?

Right now I'm reading Sally Clarkson's book, The Ministry of Motherhood. God is so funny sometimes: I wrote this post and read her seventh chapter the next day to find that it was much about the same thing! I love Sally's style. Reading her stuff is often like sitting down and hanging out with a friend!

This is indeed an amazing idea especially for parents who want to introduce Jesus to their kids. Kids are amazingly intelligent, but they can be skeptical sometimes. They have so many questions that would really leave you in awe. But with a little patience, they would understand that Jesus really moves in our lives. Like what you said, you can show things around them which are proof that Jesus really is a great God.
